Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs you enter, by the method stated below it. RoughInDesk publishes no market averages and quotes no survey: the defaults are a worked example to replace with your own. The pipe dimensions in the pipe-size tool are the published standard sizes, cited on that page.
The figures above start from a worked example ($687.16). Change any input and the answer updates as you type.

This raises the invoice for a plumbing service call in the order a service call actually happens. It starts with the diagnostic or service call fee, adds labor at your rate for the time on site, marks the parts up from your cost, adds any trip charge, applies sales tax to the parts where your state charges it, and subtracts anything already paid or held as a deposit to give the balance due. It is arithmetic you can do on a tailgate; the point is doing it the same way every time.
The diagnostic fee is its own line, always
Whether you credit the fee against the repair or keep it, it belongs on the invoice as a separate line, because it is the only line that pays for the drive and the diagnosis. Folding it into the repair price makes the repair look expensive and makes waiving it invisible; showing it and then discounting it visibly is a stronger position and a clearer record when the customer queries the total months later.
Marking up parts is not a mark up on the invoice price
The parts markup covers holding stock on the truck, the drive to the supply house when it is not on the truck, the counter time, the return of the wrong part and the warranty replacement you fit for nothing a year later. Contractors who mark up only what the supply house charged them are being paid for none of that. The field is yours to set; a water heater usually carries a lower percentage than a cartridge.
Balance due is what gets paid, so put it last and put it big
An invoice that ends in a subtotal, a tax line and a total, with a deposit acknowledged somewhere in the middle, gets queried. One that ends in a single balance due figure, after the deposit has already been taken off, gets paid. This page computes it that way for the same reason: the last number on the page should be the number the customer needs to act on.
Plumbing invoice software: common questions
Is this free plumbing invoice software?
The pricing and the arithmetic are free here with no account, and you can print the result. RoughInDesk Pro adds the parts that make it an invoice you send: your own logo and license number, a clean PDF without our line on it, a pay link to your own Stripe account, saving it against the customer, and pushing it into your books.
Should I charge a trip fee as well as a diagnostic fee?
Only when the drive is genuinely outside your normal area, and say so on the invoice. Inside your area the diagnostic fee already pays for the trip. Charging both by default is the line that costs you the repeat customer.
Do I charge sales tax on labor?
In most states, no: the tax applies to the parts and not the service. The page applies your rate to the marked-up parts only. A few states tax repair labor; check your state's rule and adjust the parts price or add the labor tax as its own line.
